Sara and I love succulents so much! They’re such interesting plants, and perfect for indoors as well as out. We love that they’re very easy to take care of as well. So even if you weren’t blessed with a green thumb, a little succulent should still survive your touch. They can also be planted in almost anything. thanks to the succulents small root system & drought tolerance. So today we’re gonna how you a super simple way to make your own succulent garden/ how to contain your succulents.
I had a small cactus that needed replanted as well as some succulents that I bought, so I decided to just put together this succulent garden as a great outside table piece, and I can also bring it inside when the colder months start to hit.
To get started you’ll need a few things:
(Check out the widget at the end of this post for some other recommended items)
Succulents/Cacti – I used 4 succulents/cacti but you can use less. Try not to put too many in, because they will grow a bit.
Aquarium Rocks or decor rocks(I picked up white aquarium rocks, but you can use any color)
A cool container! I just used this pink bowl I picked up for $1 at Walmart last year
Pebbles – optional
Small bag of sand
Potting soil (or Cactus/Succulent Soil)
Start off by lining the bottom of your container with rocks, as well as poke a few holes in the bottom so water can drain if needed. Then add the soil. If you’re using regular potting soil, I recommend mixing in some of the rocks and sand. If you’re using the cactus soil, you can skip that step. The rocks, as well as sand help create good drainage and the sand absorbs some moisture. Once your soil is prepared you’re ready to start planting.
Plant your succulents and keep spacing in mind. I gave each of my plants about 2-3 inches to grow. Also if you have one that you know will hang over or something, place that near the edge. It’s a good idea to pick different color succulents/cacti to create a great variety to look at.
Once you have your succulents planted you can add more aquarium rocks along the top. You can add as little or as much as you want, its completely up to you. I wanted mine mostly covered with white to really contrast everything, so I did that. I also added some large smooth black rock as little accents!
That’s pretty much all there is to it. Now that you have your succulents planted, here are some of my quick tips for keeping them alive:
1.) Dont water them after planting. Let them stand for a day, this will make them tough, trust me.
2.) Don’t overwater. Succulents should only be watered whenever the soil is dry.
3.) Place in an area with LOTS of light. Preferably indirect sunlight.
4.) Use succulent food! -I recommend this one from Miracle Gro
5.)Don’t discard leaves that fall off! You can use these to make new succulents. See how to here.
Good luck guys, and happy planting! Also, it helps to have furry friends to help you do your gardening lol.
